It has been one record-breaking success story after another since the last two and half years in Imo State University (IMSU) under the able leadership of Professor Uchefula U. Chukwumaeze, SAN, FCArb, as the Vice-Chancellor.
The latest good news is that Mberede Benedict Obinna, a graduate of the Department of Surveying, in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Imo State University, has emerged as the overall best candidate at the 2024 Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON) Professional Examinations.
According to the Head of the Surveying Department in IMSU, Surv. Dr. P. C. Anyadiegwu, "SURCON Professional Examination is an annual exam and the Council is the statutory body that oversees the practice of Surveying in Nigeria. They annually conduct exams for Surveyors trying to register. The exam is a difficult one because, SURCON is always meticulous in everything they do, and the exam has a procedure".
"You must have your folios in five different areas of Surveying, you must be tested in Surveying laws and regulations, and you must be tested in essay in a general view. Fortunately for us at IMSU, Mberede Benedict made us proud by emerging as the best and SURCON awarded him with a cash prize of two hundred and fifty thousand Naira (#250,000.00).
"Once you graduate from; an accredited institution, you must stay 2 years with a surveyor who is a registered member of SURCON and is practicing in any of the states in Nigeria. After spending 2 years with that surveyor and he certifies you free, you now have the right to obtain the SURCON form".
"Then after, the body will run a background check on you, starting with your school to confirm whether it is accredited or not and to confirm if you have spent 2 years with a practicing surveyor. If they verify all these, they now shortlist your name for the examination. Meanwhile, you must have projects you did in the 5 areas of Surveying while you are undergoing the two years of compulsory service under a practicing surveyor. But most importantly, your Department or School must be accredited".
Speaking further, the Head of the Department said that he is very proud to work under Professor U. U. Chukwumaeze, SAN, FCArb, as the Vice-Chancellor. He made so many things seamless for us in the Department. He added that Professor Chukwumaeze set a standard in the University and everyone is working hard to achieve that standard. He also said that the standard has also been transferred to the students, describing Professor Chukwumaeze as "the brain behind all the successes in IMSU ".
It would be recalled that a few weeks ago, IMSU Engineering student emerged as Second National Best at the National Best Graduating Students of Engineering competition organized by CODET. Also, 240 Medical Laboratory Science students recorded a 100% Pass at the Medical Laboratory Council Regulated Professional Examination, among other record-breaking achievements by IMSU students under Professor U. U. Chukwumaeze led Administration at IMSU.
